Savings on Heating Costs
Here are some great ways to save energy in your home!
These energy saving ideas for the house can save hundreds of dollars each
year!
- Insulate your hot-water heater with an insulating blanket to
minimize heat loss.
- Seal all air leaks. Weatherize all windows and doors and make
sure to seal leaks around light switches and outlets.
- Add attic insulation.
- Weatherize windows and doors.
- Install clear plastic on the inside of older energy inefficient
windows in sub-freezing temperatures. Replace the older windows
with new energy efficient windows.
- Add insulation around basement and foundation walls. Take care
when adding insulation in heavy soils.
- Add wall insulation. You may have insulations blown into
uninsulated spaces or remove finishing material and add fiberglass bats
from inside. Also consider converting your 4-inch walls into 6-inch
walls with 2 by 2 furring strips.
- If replacing siding, make sure to install a house wrap type product
to act as breathable weather barrier.
- Set the hot water heat temperature to between 110 and 120 degrees F.
You will save money and prevent water that is too hot scalding you.
- Keep the thermostat set at 68 instead of 72. This can save up to 12%
on heat costs.
- Use energy saving blinds and shades at night and when away.
Wholesale blinds are available online at
BlindsWholesale.com.

- According to the
Air
Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute, here are some tips to
lower your cost of air conditioning: maintain your AC unit as
recommended, make sure the air output area outside is free of
obstructions or shrubs, replace or clean filters monthly, weather proof
your house as you would do for heating, and consider replacing your old
unit with a more efficient unit .
- Consider installing one of the newer
Tankless Water Heaters
available. These on-demand water heaters not only save money but produce
hot water without delay.
- To save on hot water heat, use one tub of water for the family
baths. Start with the smallest kids, then add water for the bigger kids,
and then the adults.
- You can save money burning wood to heat your house, if the wood
supply is economical or free. Often you can obtain free wood
pallets and free log cores at lumber mills.
