Savings on Electricity!
If you have often asked yourself "How can I lower my
electric bill", you are in the right place. These ways to save electricity
can potentially save hundreds per year!
- Use fluorescent bulbs - they use less watts and last much longer.
The US Dept. of Energy states that if 25% of your lighting is replaced
with fluorescent, your lighting bill can be reduced by as much as 50%.
- Vacuum under and in back of your refrigerator to keep coils clean
and working efficiently - this is will save money and increase the life
of your refrigerator. Also, a full refrigerator and freezer runs
more efficiently than one that is empty - if needed, fill it with gallon
jugs of drinking water.
- Do full loads instead of half loads in the dishwasher - this can
potentially save $20 - $40 per year.
- Use one tub of water for the family baths. Start with the smallest
kids, then add water for the bigger kids, and then the adults.
- Keep the thermostat set at 68 instead of 72. This can save up to 12%
on heat costs.
- Set the hot water heat temperature to between 110 and 120 degrees F.
You will save money and prevent water that is too hot scalding you.
- Insulate your hot-water heater with an insulating blanket to
minimize heat loss.
- Switch from electric hot water to gas - It is estimated that a gas
hot water heater produces twice as much hot water per dollar and thus if
you spend $50 per month on electric hot water, you will save $25 per
month by switching.
- Use ENERGY STAR® certified
appliances. A directory for finding these appliances is found at
this link.
- If you fill a kids pool in the summer, use the water for watering
your plants when it needs to be drained or changed. This provides
as much as 50 gallons of water that would otherwise be wasted.
