Savings on Auto Costs - Cheap Online Car Rentals

Here are some great frugal car ideas for saving on auto-related costs. You can adjust your driving habits and do other things to save gas. Car parts to save gas? Read on.

  • Buy a good-quality car and keep it 5 to 7 years instead of repurchasing each 2 years.  This minimizes depreciation losses and can save you up to $1000 per year.

  • Manual transmissions can save 2-5 MPG over automatic transmissions, saving you up to $5 to $10 per month.

  • Maintain your vehicle as recommended - if you don't want to do this maintenance yourself, take your car to a qualified mechanic. This can save thousands in costly repairs. Also, a properly tuned car can get up to 2-5 MPG over a poorly tuned car.

  • Shop around for insurance - rates can vary widely. Savings here can amount up to $100 to $500 per year.

  • When buying a used car, always do a check of the cars history by entering its VIN number through a service like AutoCheck Vehicle History Reports by Experian to verify seller claims of ownership, odometer, flood damage, etc. and you will know upfront if you are dealing with an honest seller. That one-owner car may really be a six-owner car!

  • Never buy a used car at its "retail" book value. Rather, you should only offer a dealer or private party an amount about half-way between the retail and trade-in value.  Keep in mind that dealers rarely pay more than the trade-in value for a vehicle.

  • Use cruise control, keep tires properly inflated, avoid jack rabbit starts, and drive 55 mph instead of 65 mph to improve gas mileage and reduce gas use by up to 15%.

  • Don't waste your money on dubious car parts to save gas.  For more info on this go to this FTC article.  The exception would be doing good maintenance and replacing plugs, wires, air, and oil filters.

  • For cheap online car rentals, try Fox Rent A Car

  • If you are willing to make a trip to pick up a car, you can buy cars on ebay at reduced prices and make a trip with an extra person to drive the new car home. I have several friends that have obtained some really nice cars this way.

In short, all of these savings on autos can amount up to several thousand dollars per year!
